5 Reasons Why Winter Weight Loss is Best

Winter Wellness Part 1


As a Naturopath specialising in weight loss, I find Spring and Summer are my busiest months!

Getting started and finding that initial motivation can be easier in the warmer months, but I believe winter is THE best time to start working towards your health and weight loss goals. Here are 5 of the several reason why!

1. Party season is over!

Eating out at restaurants and going out for drinks becomes less frequent in the cooler months. Take advantage of that! Social events don’t have to interrupt your weight loss progress but unfortunately they can disrupt momentum and sometimes, a small slice of cake or a little glass of wine is all it takes to send you off track! In saying that, it doesn’t have to be that way and I see lots of patients who maintain an active social life while achieving their health and weight loss goals but it is easier when you’re not being tempted!


2. Winter food!

Who doesn’t love a big bowl of warm soup in the cooler months?! This is a great way to get your veggies in and a perfect meal to assist weight loss. Roasts and slow cooked meals are also an easy go-to in the cooler months and are also fantastic, fat burning meals!


3. Fat burning increases!

In winter our body needs to work harder to maintain an ideal temperature. This means more calories are used just doing your daily activities! Add an extra walk or two in there and you’ll become a fat burning machine! When you exercise outdoors in the cooler weather your body has to work harder to warm the air you breathe, which can lead to an increase in the calories burned during your workout too!


4. Healthy diet = healthy gut = stronger immune system!

Winter tends to be the time of the year when everyone catches a cold! By improving your overall health and increasing the amount of nutrient dense food you eat, you will stand a better chance of fighting off the nasty bugs that go around in the colder months!


5. Be summer ready!

As soon as the warmer weather hits, everyone wants to lose weight FAST! There are lots of social events to attend, sleeveless tops, summer dresses and anxiety about being able to feel comfortable in summer clothes! This causes a lot of people to seek ways to lose weight quickly and unfortunately this weight loss is only temporary and quite often comes back on as fast as it was lost. When you start making healthy changes in winter, there is no rush. You can take the time to develop strong, healthy habits that will last for life. By the time the warmer months come along you will be feeling healthy, confident and proud of what you have achieved. The healthy habits and will power you develop over winter will help you to stay on track over the party season!
