Leptin Resistance: The Silent Weight Loss Inhibitor

Leptin is one of the most important hormones when it comes to weight loss (and weight gain) yet many people have never heard of it!

Leptin is actually produced by fat cells and its one job it is tell the brain that the body has had enough to eat.

Unfortunately, when there are too many fat cells in the body (and too many signals being released), the brain becomes resistant to leptin and begins to completely ignore the signal causing many people to eat far beyond what they need.

This condition is called leptin resistance and is one of the leading causes of obesity.

What are the signs associated with leptin resistance?

  • High BMI
  • Hungry all the time
  • Cravings for carbohydrates and sweets
  • Stubborn weight gain
  • High stress levels
  • Sluggish thyroid function
  • Poor sleep

What can you do to repair leptin sensitivity?

The best way to reverse leptin resistance is to cut down on highly processed, inflammatory foods. These foods can lead to obesity, which is a major factor in leptin resistance.

The next goal should be to reduce body fat.

What should I eat to improve leptin sensitivity?

  • Lean protein e.g. chicken, fish, red meat
  • Vegetables & fruit e.g. green leafy veg, berries, apples, pears
  • Complex grains and legumes e.g. chickpeas, lentils, quinoa, brown rice (high fibre foods)
  • Healthy fat e.g. olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds

What foods should I avoid?

  • Foods high in "bad" fats e.g. margarine, fried food, processed meat
  • Refined carbohydrates e.g. bread, cakes, pasta, crackers, chips, biscuits, cereal
  • Sweets & sweet drinks e.g. soft drink, diet drinks, chocolate, lollies, muesli bars

Remember, weight loss may be slow and difficult at first. Things will get easier as you go due to an increase in leptin sensitivity and a decrease in hunger and cravings.

There are certain herbs, nutrients and styles of eating that can make this process significantly easier!
