Natural Remedies for Hay Fever

Why does hay fever occur?

Hay fever is a common allergy to the proteins in the pollen of certain trees, grasses and flowers which can produce some troublesome symptoms that are most often experienced in spring and summer.

Having been a hay fever sufferer myself, I’ve tried numerous herbal remedies, pharmaceuticals and diet changes to improve the condition so that I can enjoy my favourite time of the year without a stuffy nose and swollen, itchy eyes!

Here are my top tips for managing hay fever:

Pineapple Juice

Conveniently, pineapples are at their sweetest and juiciest during the spring and summer months! Fresh pineapple or freshly squeezed pineapple juice is rich in bromelain which is an enzyme that is effective at reducing the inflammatory symptoms associated with hay fever.

High Dose Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a potent, natural anti-histamine that also helps to boost immune function and reduce inflammation. A high dose works best for hay fever flare ups but the dosage will vary depending on your body composition. Be sure to seek professional advice before self-medicating.

Garlic & Horseradish

Quite often garlic and horseradish are found together in over-the-counter hay fever supplements due to their effectiveness in reducing sinus congestion. These will work just as effectively if added to your daily diet throughout the hay fever months. Try adding a ¼ of a teaspoon of each to your salad dressing.

Hay Fever Hygiene

Shower thoroughly, wash your hair, and change your clothes when you come indoors after spending time outside to remove pollen collected during the day. Pollen can (and will!) stick to your hair, skin and clothing, especially on a windy day. Showering before bed is also a great idea! Flushing your eyes and sinus passage out with a gentle, sterile saline solution is also a great way to flush out trapped pollen.

Reduce Dairy

Dairy products are known as mucous forming foods and can make sinus congestion even worse during a hay fever flare up. Avoid dairy along with other mucous forming foods such as white flour products, sugar and highly refined foods. Replace these foods with plenty of fresh, hydrating fruits and vegetables.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Burning or diffusing eucalyptus essential oil is a lovely, gentle way to open up the nasal passages. For a persistent stuffy nose, add a few drops to a bowl of steamy water and inhale deeply for 3-5 minutes.

These tips are just some of the remedies that have personally worked for me in the past, individual results will vary. There are several other solutions to this annoying condition, if you would like to receive a personalised treatment plan, contact me any time to book your consultation.
