This Party Season Stay Healthy
Staying healthy through the Christmas break can be a real challenge!
So how do we get through the silly season without completely sabotaging all of our previous healthy weight loss success? TIP ONE - Mindset Matters It is too easy to say "I'll start again in January" and this mindset quite often gives us permission to overindulge. Losing weight through healthy lifestyle changes should be viewed as a long term commitment. Not a diet that you start and stop. One of the keys to long-term weight management success is to learn how to enjoy social situations and family gatherings without "over-doing it" Enjoy a drink or two and have some of the delicious dessert, but make sure you are drinking plenty of water, eating your veggies and being mindful about potions sizes too. Weight maintenance is all about finding the right balance for you! TIP TWO - Eat Well at Home Eating healthy at home is easy! You are in complete control over what you keep in your fridge and what you put on your plate. We do tend to eat more meals away from home during the festive season, which can lead to situations where your food choices are not completely in our control. This is OK! Enjoy the food that is served to you and make healthier choices where possible. All of the healthy meals that you choose to eat when you are in control of what goes on your plate will out weigh these other situations and will help you to maintain a feeling of health and well-being over the Christmas break. Enjoying a healthy snack like a light salad or a piece of fruit before you go out can help you to have greater control over what you choose to eat in social situations. An empty stomach combined with low blood sugar levels can often make it difficult to exercise self control. TIP THREE - Drink Less Drinking too much alcohol is quite often the main cause behind "silly season" weight gain! Alcohol is full of empty calories, it rapidly converts into sugar in our bloodstream which is then stored as fat. Being the designated driver is one of the easiest ways to avoid the social pressures of drinking too much! Choose to engage in some alcohol free outings and remember to drink plenty of water between drinks. TIP FOUR - Stay Active The great thing about this time of the year is that the days are so much longer! Use these extra hours of daylight to go out for a nice walk. 20-30 minutes, 3-4 times per week will help you to reduce stress levels, improve your quality of sleep and burn some excess calories. Engaging in regular exercise is a great way to complement healthy diet choices! TIP FIVE - Take a Probiotic Probiotics help to keep the bacteria in your digestive system healthy. Alcohol, fried food and sugary foods or drinks are just some of the things that can destroy this bacteria. A healthy digestive system craves healthy food! Taking a probiotic daily in combination with a healthy diet will help to reduce bloating and sluggish digestion. If you are spending your holidays overseas, a probiotic can also help to reduce the risk of catching any travel bugs! These tips are super easy to follow and will allow you to maintain your health over the Christmas break.
